John W. Cooper, age 92, of Lombard

John was the beloved husband of Donna M. nee Urie, whom he married in 1959; loving father of Ann (John) Gieser of Carol Stream and Michael (Kimberly) of Wheaton; fond grandfather of Donna Gieser of Carol Stream, Cameron Cooper of Wheaton and Mikaela Cooper of Wheaton; dear brother of Richard Jr. (Irene) of Oklahoma, Natalie (Jim) Hutchens of Kansas, Carolyn of Kansas and the late Joe of Kansas; many nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, John Urie, of Canada.

John had been a Lombard resident for 44 years, since 1975.  He was very active at Sacred Heart Church.  His activities included prayer groups, Bible Study and prayed in the Adoration Chapel.  John belonged to a Prayer Group, the Blue Army, at Visitation Parish in Elmhurst.  He also was active at St. Stanislous Kosta Parish in Chicago.  From 1988-2011, John made many pilgrimages to Italy, Poland, France and Spain.  John repaired damaged statues at many churches in the area.  He also made rosaries and carved crucifixes.

John was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1950-1952.  He served for 25 years, from 1963 to 1988 and retired from Hines VA Hospital as Assistant to the Chief of Staff at Hines VA and was a Supervisor of the social workers there.    He also worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas.

John graduated from Cathedral High School in Wichita, Kansas.  John attended Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas, receiving a BS in 1949.  John attended seminary at North American College in Rome from 1952-1956.  In 1960, he received his MS from St. Patrick School of Social Work in Ottawa, Canada.

Music was always a big part of John’s life.  He grew up singing around the piano at home with his family and his voice was always heard singing at church.  He had a beautiful voice and a wonderful ability to harmonize.  John learned guitar after he retired and often had music playing at home.

A Visitation will be held Friday, October 25, from 4-8 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.  Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 26, with 9:30 AM Prayers to 10 AM Mass at Sacred Heart Church, 114 S. Elizabeth St., Lombard.  Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, Wheaton.

In lieu of flowers, Masses are preferred.

Melvin J. Schultz, age 92, of Schaumburg, formerly of Northbrook and Maywood

American_Flag_x300Melvin J. Schultz, age 92, of Schaumburg, formerly of Northbrook and Maywood, died October 20, 2019 at Sunrise of Schaumburg.

Melvin  was the loving husband of the late Reta nee Miller; loving father of Ken (Joanne) of Schaumburg, and Charles; grandfather of Arica (Tyson) Vancil of Connecticut, Allison (Cory) Woodrich of Arlington Heights, Nicole (Michael) Woodrich of Schaumburg, Kyle, Kelsie, Michelle (Dave) Morawski of Chicago and Jacob; great-grandfather of Cory, Devin, Daniela, Mike, Emerson, Harrison and Eleanor.

Melvin grew up in Maywood and attended Proviso High School, graduating in 1945.  He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in WWII and the Korean War.

Melvin was the former head of National Advertising and Catalogue Sales at Sears & Roebuck Company.  He was a former President of the Chicago Advertising Club.

Mel was an accomplished artist.  He enjoyed camping, fishing and poker.  He stayed friends with his Proviso High School group “The Buddies” for all of his life.

Graveside services will be held at North Northfield Cemetery, Northbrook, Illinois.

Roger D. Miller, age 79, of Sycamore, formerly of Lombard, Villa Park

Visitation will be held Thursday, October 24th from 10 AM until time of service at 12:00 Noon at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St, Lombard. Interment will follow at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst.

Roger is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Barbara nee Veverka; his loving children, Diana (Jeff) Miletich of Tennessee, Kerrie (Paul) Moniuszko of St. Charles and Steven (Judi) Miller of Pennsylvania; cherished grandfather of Rachel (Fiance’ Kyle), Jocelyn, and Cameron.

Roger is preceded in death by his brother, Robert.

Roger grew up in Chicago. He joined the ROTC while at Foreman High School. Roger graduated from Lake Forest College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1961. Roger lived in Lombard / Villa Park from 1962- 1990. He then lived in Crystal Lake for 3 years, Pennsylvania for 14 years and came back to Sycamore, IL in 2006, where Roger resided until his death. Over the years he worked for Motorola, DAC- Con, Eaton, and Component Specialists. Roger was an avid golfer and loved fishing and bowling.

Nancy Ann Falash (nee Nutley), age 75, of Villa Park

FalashNancy Ann Falash (nee Nutley), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, age 75, of Villa Park, IL, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2019.  She was born February 17, 1944 in Chicago, IL to Lawrence and Catherine (Vanik) Nutley, whom preceded her in death.  She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard E. Falash Jr. of Villa Park, IL; her 5 children, Richard (Donna) Falash of Addison, IL, Anthony Falash of Lake in the Hills, IL, Joseph Falash of Rockford, IL, Nancy (Marc) Rowe of Villa Park, IL, and Mary Ann (Robert) Del Santo of Crystal Lake, IL.  She was a loving grandmother to her 11 grandchildren, Stephanie, Madeline, Rebecca, Emily, Chloe, Joseph Jr., Marcus Jr., Karman, Catherine, Robert Jr., and Jacob; as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Cecilia and Patrick.  Nancy is also survived by her siblings Peter, Patricia, Lawrence Jr., Edward, Catherine, and Margaret; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her other siblings John, Charles, Thomas, James, Eileen, Rosemary, Gerald, and Arthur; as well as her daughters-in-law Samantha Falash and Laura Falash.

Nancy was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan who enjoyed bowling, gourmet desserts, and classic TV.  She also was a loyal parishioner of St. Alexander’s Church in Villa Park, IL for over 40 years.

Friends and family can celebrate her life at a visitation on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main Street, Lombard, IL 60148. A short visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 from 9:00am until time of prayers at 9:45am from Brust Funeral Home to St. Alexander’s Church, 300 S. Cornell, Villa Park, IL 60181 for 10:15 am Mass. Interment immediately following mass at Lakewood Memorial Park, 30W730 Highway 20, Elgin, IL 60120.

Inez A. Galvan, age 95, of Lombard

Inez A.Galvan, 95, a long-time resident of Lombard, died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.

Inez was a loving wife and mother. She was also committed to community service. In addition to her work with various charities, she was appointed by Governor Edgar to the Illinois Community College Board and served with distinction for seven years. Governor Ryan honored Inez as, “Hispanic Woman of the Year” in a ceremony at Daly Plaza. She also served as a national chairwoman for the American GI Forum.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph and Richard Martinez, and by numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews and Grand Nieces and Nephews. Inez was a kind and generous person. She will be deeply missed by her many friends and loving family.

A Memorial Gathering will be held Monday, October 21, from 10 AM until time of a Celebration of Life Service at 11 AM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.  Private Interment.

A Memorial Service will be held from 1pm to 4pm Saturday, October 19th, 2019 at Brust Funeral Home.

Raymond A. Bragado was born in Chicago to Enid Svaboda and Tranquilino Bragado on December 17th, 1930. He worked as an Electrician/Engineer. He served in the United States Navy. He was involved in The National Republican Congressional Committee.

Raymond A. Bragado is preceded in death by Betty Jensen, Enid Svaboda, Tranquilino Bragado, Ursula Bragado.

Raymond A. Bragado is survived by his daughter, Rene Bragado, Granddaughter Cherica Bragado, Loving Grandson, Tony J. Bragado and Proud Great-Grandfather of Tony J. Bragado & Aiden J. Bragado, Daughter in Law, Alani Bragado. Beloved friends Velta & Edward Kopacek.

Barry D. Giovanine, DDS, age 64, of Glen Ellyn

Barry was the beloved husband of Sandra L., nee Allen; loving father of Bradley A. Giovanine, of New York City, and Stephanie M. Giovanine, of Glen Ellyn; dear brother of Cathy, of Mt. Prospect; and fond uncle, great-uncle, and friend of many.

Barry was a graduate of Augustana College. He went on to graduate from Loyola Dental School. For over thirty years, Barry built a dental practice in Lombard. He was an avid golfer and loved taking his family to Disney World.

A remembrance gathering will be held Sunday, October 20, 2019, from 1-3 PM with reflections and remarks beginning at 3 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment is private.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 15, from 3-8 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 16, with  9:30 AM prayers from Brust Funeral Home to Sacred Heart Church for 10 AM Mass. Interment will be private at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Elmhurst.

Beloved husband of Joan, nee Remec. Loving father of Mary, of Chicago, Nancy, of Lombard, Patricia, of Chicago, Margaret “Peggy” and Victoria “Vicky,” of Chicago. Preceded in death by three sisters. Fond uncle of seven. Many great nieces and nephews.  An abundance of great friends.

Ed had been a Lombard resident since 1956. He served in the United States Marine Corp in the Korean War, and at the time, was the youngest captain in the USMC. Ed had a successful career at Continental Bank for over 33 years, retiring as Vice President, Bond Department.

Ed’s overriding trait is loyalty-loyalty to family, country, church, community and friends.  Ed was long involved with many groups and organizations.  Ed coached girls’ softball teams for 32 years (1969-2001-part of 5 decades), including the Roos and the Flower Pots, as well as managing the Lombard travel team, winning Lombard’s first state championship.  Ed also coached the Sacred Heart School girls’ track and cross country team for 35 years.  Ed even tried his hand at coaching Glenbard East freshman softball team (1993), the Montini HS freshman softball team (1994-1998) and the Sacred Heart School boys’ 5th-6th grade basketball team (2000-2002).  So what does one do in the Fall?  Well for many years, you join the Sacred Heart School football program on the “chain gang” at home football games.  Ed positively impacted the lives of over 500 girls and boys through coaching and positive attitude. Ed was a graduate of York High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and the tuba in the band.  He graduated from Miami University of Ohio where he received his BS in Business.

Ed, always a proponent of Lombard, was a member of the Village of Lombard Finance Committee for 44 years (1967-2011), as well as the Lombard Hotel-Motel/Community Promotions and Tourism for 28 years (1987-2015).  At Sacred Heart Church, he was a Mass usher for 50 years.  He was on the Sacred Heart School Board (1970-1973) and worked 24 of the 25 German Fests cooking brats (and drinking some beer).  An avid sports fan, Ed was a season ticket holder for the Chicago Bears, loved the Cubs and always enjoyed golf with his buddies.  Ed loved meeting up with his friends and was one of the first to jump in on a project.  Most importantly, Ed dedicated himself to his family and their happiness.

Margaret M. Gatto, age 94, of Addison, formerly of Berkeley, died October 5, 2019 at Lexington Healthcare in Lombard.

Margaret was the beloved mother of Sherry (Butch) Hollands, Joanne Szurek and the late Richard (Christine) Gatto; adored grandmother of Gina (Dorie), Steven, Erik (Cindy), Julie, Jeff, Carissa (James), Andy (Franceska), Branden, Corey, Jessica, Jaime, and Anthony (Madysen); great-grandmother of Jacob, Nick, Mackenzie, Lorelei, Morgan, Jensen, Shaylee, Leah, and Grayson.

Margaret had been a resident of Addison for 20 years and had previously lived in Berkeley.

Margaret loved bowling. She also loved her bingo. She would play several times a week and always hated to lose. She also loved talking to her family and friends on the phone. She loved listening to music and singing along with the songs.

A Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 9, from 3-8 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.  Funeral Services will be Thursday, October 10, at 10 AM at Brust Funeral Home.  Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

James A. Spalo, age 59, of Lombard

SpaloJim Spalo, age 59, of Lombard, passed away peacefully September 24, 2019, surrounded by his wife and best friend, Mary, and his children, Kimberly, Catherine and Joseph. Jim was born in Berkeley, IL and had a full and fantastic life. He was a retired Air Force veteran. Jim was a proud member of the IAMAW and a member of the VFW Lombard post.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Angelo and Dorothy Spalo and is survived by his sister, Pamela Frank, and brothers Bob (Barbara) Spalo and Bill(Kathleen) Spalo.
