John A. ‘Jack’ Bretsnyder, age 94, of Punta Gorda, Florida, formerly of Lombard

bretsnyderJOHN A. ‘JACK’ BRETSNYDER, age 94, of Punta Gorda, Florida, died February 24 in Florida.

Mr. Bretsnyder is survived by four children, Glen (Sharon), Tom (Denise), Lynn Bretsnyder, and William (Kimberly); eight (8) grandchildren; and seven (7) great-grandchildren.
Mr. Bretsnyder is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie, nee Bolte; and his son, Larry.

Jack was born April 1, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. He was well known in the Lombard and suburban areas of Chicago for his home building business and his real estate ventures. Jack was a U.S. Veteran having served from 1944-1945.

Jack’s chuckling smile will remain embraced with us always! Jack’s final words were ‘I did my best and I am happy!’.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.

Funeral Service will be held Monday at 10 AM at Brust Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Bretsnyder will peacefully lay to rest next to his wife, Marjorie, and his son, Larry at Chapel Hill Gardens West, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois.

Philip L. Gavin, age 89, of Lombard

PHILIP L. GAVIN, age 89, of Lombard, died February 25 at Lexington of Lombard.

Visitation will be held Thursday, February 28 from 3 to 8 pm at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, March 1 with prayers at 9:30 AM from Brust Funeral Home to Christ The King Church for 10 AM Mass.
Entombment will be at Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum, Wheaton, Illinois.

Mr. Gavin is survived by seven (7) children, Michael (Nancy) of Kentucky, Thomas (Cynthia) of Bartlett, James (Nichole) of Lombard, Maureen Danielson of Oregon, Illinois, Robert (Valorue) of Ohio, Stephen (Carie) of West Virginia, and Michelle (Michael) Perry of Poplar Grove; 23 Grandchildren; 11 Great-Grandchildren; his brother, Donald T. (Janice) of Indiana; his brother-in-law, Gerald Huempfner of Wisconsin and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Mr. Gavin is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, nee McHugh; and his brothers and sisters, Lois, Sally, Tom, and Jean.

Mr. Gavin was a long-time resident of Lombard and was also formerly of Hinckley eight (8) years. He was a Veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. Mr. Gavin had worked for Argonne Lab and retired from Fermi Lab after 30 years. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic Deacon in 1975 and had served at Christ The King Church in Lombard until 1998. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society at Christ The King.

WILLIAM QUALKENBUSH, age 87, of Lombard, died February 23 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove, Illinois.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 27 from 3 to 8 pm at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.
Funeral Service will be held Thursday, February 28 with prayers at 9:30 AM from Brust Funeral Home to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lombard, for 10 AM Mass.
Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.

Mr. Qualkenbush is survived by three children, Jerome (Cynthia), Ellen, and Leonard (Karen); four grandchildren, Bret, Hillary, Neil (Lindsay), and Karlen (Mike) Tolkson; three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Lillian, and Miles; and one on the way; his brother, Robert; two sisters, Irene Combs, and Evelyn Gann; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Qualkenbush is preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve; his sister-in-law, Marcella Qualkenbush; two brothers-in-law, Don Combs and Wiley Gann; and 10 brothers and sisters.

Mr. Qualkenbush was a resident of Lombard 58 years. He worked as a Lithographer. Mr. Qualkenbush had owned and operated Bill & Bob’s Shell Service Station in Elmhurst for many years. He enjoyed gambling with his wife in Nevada and loved to play Keno. Mr. Qualkenbush was a Member of the Masonic Lodge. He excelled at horseshoes and bowling. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, and sports. Mr. Qualkenbush loved the Cubs. He was a simple man and loved spending time with family.

Gerald “Jerry” A. Strickland, age 56 of Elmhurst, formerly of Glen Ellyn and Lombard, died peacefully with his family at his side at Elmhurst Hospital on Friday, February 22. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 9th at 1:30 p.m. at Wheaton Evangelical Church, 520 East Roosevelt Road, Wheaton. Interment will be private at Elm Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Strickland is survived by: his wife, Wendy, nee Ostberg; his daughter, Alison of Villa Park; his sons, Jake of Elmhurst and Mike of Elmhurst; his brother, Steve (Kathy) of Lisle; eight nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard M. and Madeline, nee Klobuchar; his brother, Raymond; and his sister, Mary Ann Smith.

Jerry grew up in Lombard and attended Pleasant Lane School, Lombard Jr. High School, and graduated from Glenbard East H.S. in 1974. He lived in Glen Ellyn 20 years before moving to Elmhurst 2 years ago. He was a member of a Laborer’s Union. He loved cars and the Beatles, and was an avid guitar player.

Mr. Quitter is survived by his wife, Nicolette S. nee Salkind ; two daughters, Josephine (Jeff) Ceglarek of Chicago and Jacqueline (Mario) Quitter of Chicago; and 4 grandchildren: Jacob, Kaitlyn, Samantha and Alexa; his mother, LaVerne of Lombard; a sister, Betty A. Quitter of Lombard; a nephew, Brian Probst and a great-nephew, Ian Probst.
Mr. Quitter is preceded in death by his father, Joseph and a sister, Margaret Probst.
Mr. Quitter was a resident of Lombard for 14 years and was formerly of Chicago. He worked for Gamma Photo as a Photo Tech. He had also worked at Road Ranger in Lombard and Budget Rental Car. He attended
St. Michael’s Grade School and Carl Schurz High School in Chicago- Old Town.

Mr. McCutcheon is survived by : his mother Barbara “Sugar” Fecarotta-Fowler; his siblings: Kim Davis, Michael McCutcheon, Renee Russo and Frankie Fowler; his nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews: Andrew, Kurt, Giana, Michael and Isabella. He was preceded in death by his father John A. and his grandparents: Rose and Anthony Fecarotta.

John was a lovable man and never complained. He had a passion and talent in football. He was always happy and laughing at himself. His favorite saying was “yeah-right-uh huh”. He was a proud veteran of the US Army and received an honorable discharge.

TataraRichard “Dick” A. Tatara 66 of Napeville, IL, died Saturday, February 9th. Born December 21, 1946 in Chicago, IL to Casmer J. and Jean M. Tatara who preceded him in death. Dick had one sister, Janice L. Panicola, also deceased. Surviving are wife of 46 years Pat (nee Middleton) and children Rick (Stephanie) Tatara, Julie (Kevin Kintz) Tatara, Nacole Tatara, Tina (Tony) Beaird and Casey Tatara, Grandchildren Lauren, Kallie, Talia, Alex and Sean. Dick was a fond brother in law of Katherine (Ralph) Kern, Laurentine (Chuck) Martin, Joann (Jim) Savickas, Ceil (Mike Price) and Michael Panicola. He was a fond uncle and great-uncle to many.
Dick attended DePaul Academy in Chicago, graduating in 1965. He was a strong athlete who excelling in wrestling. Dick was always proud to tell the story that he had the highest entrance exam score in the school’s history. Legend has it that he had only missed one question; how many bushels in a peck? For which he had the right answer and changed his mind at the last minute. The correct answer is four. He attended the IBM trade-school for computers learning to repair and maintain their original punch-card computer systems. Dick and Pat married June 25, 1966 at Nativity of Our Lord Church in Bridgeport . Dick’s true calling was sales. He was a longtime car salesman who worked for several dealers in the Chicagoland area including: Villa Park Ford, Howard Pontiac and Max Madson Mitsubishi. Dick was a people person who enjoyed storytelling. He had a strong love of music and a beautiful singing voice. A private memorial for family and friends will be held in April. Inurnment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.

Carole Ann McNickle, nee Howe, 61, beloved wife of Alan McNickle for 39 wonderful years, passed away February 5, 2013. A devoted and loving mother to Allison, Meredith, and Alan, proud daughter of the late Evans and Grace, and dedicated sister to Ronn, Roger, Larry, Donna, Robert, Stephen, John, and James, Carole was a reliable and resourceful call center manager at Eddie Z’s Blinds and Draperies for 11 years. Elizabeth Anne Putong, nee Sweetman, age 82 of Bolingbrook, formerly of Lombard, died February 10 at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Bolingbrook. Visitation will be held Friday, February 15, from 6 until 8 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard, and will be followed by a Funeral Service at 8 PM at Brust Funeral Home. Interment will be private at St. James R.C. Cemetery in Connecticut.

Mrs. Putong is survived by: her son, James (Chris) of Bolingbrook; her daughter, Felicia of Woodridge; her grandchildren, James of Bolingbrook, Paul Andrew Putong of Lombard, Richard Herpel of Woodridge, Nicole of Lombard, and Mark of Bolingbrook; her brother, James (Maria) Sweetman Jr. of Florida; her nephew, James III (Morgan) Sweetman; her niece, Jennifer Sweetman of Florida; and her daughter-in-law, Dorrie of Lombard.
She was preceded in death by her son, Paul.

Mrs. Putong grew up in Nantucket, CT, and worked there at St. Mary’s Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She lived in Lombard from 1961-1987, and then resided at the nursing home in Bolingbrook for 16 years.
