GurkaEMMA GURKA, nee Cook, age 96, of Lombard, died April 29 at Lexington Healthcare, Lombard, Illinois.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 2, from 3 to 9 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.
Funeral Service will be held Friday, May 3 at 10 AM at Brust Funeral Home.
Interment will be at St. Adalbert Cemetery, Niles, Illinois.

Mrs. Gurka is survived by her son, Robert (Mary) of Lombard; her daughter-in-law, Helen (Tim) Tipton of Florida; three (3) grandchildren, Heather (Brian) Gondek of Mundelein, Michael of Florida, Amy Gurka of Chicago; and two (2) great-grandchildren, Soren and Anakin.
Mrs. Gurka is preceded in death by her husband, John; her son, Albert; her grandson, John Gurka; and 6 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Gurka was born in Evanston and was a resident of Lexington in Lombard for 20 years. She was formerly of the Harwood Heights neighborhood in Chicago, and then Schaumburg. Mrs. Gurka had worked for Irving Park Cemetery years ago. During World War II she helped build planes for Douglas Aircraft Company. Mrs. Gurka was a baker, crafter, and gardener.

American FlagkingJOSEPH J. KING, age 89, of Lombard, World War II Army Veteran, died April 26 at Lemont Center Nursing Home, Lemont, Illinois.

Visitation and Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 4 with Visitation from 9:00 AM until the time of Funeral Service at 11:30 AM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.
Interment will be at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.

Mr. King is survived by four children, Jeannie Jones of Dexter, Kentucky, Diane (Bill) Kielb of Naperville, Dr. Joseph, Jr. (Dr. Patricia) of Madison, Wisconsin, and Helen Winter of Lombard; eight (8) grandchildren; and five (5) great-grandchildren.
Mr. King is preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle ‘Peggy’, nee Jones; and six (6) brothers and sisters.

Mr. King was a resident of Lombard 58 years. He was a member of the Villa Park VFW and also a member of the Conservation Corp. Mr. King was an exceptional human being who was admired for his strength and kindness toward others.

Dolores Lulinski-Dybalsi, M.D., age 87, of Lombard

DOLORES LULINSKI-DYBALSKI, M.D., age 87, of Lombard, died April 19 at Beacon Hill Health Care, Lombard, Illinois.

Services were private at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.

Dr. Lulinski-Dybalski is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jack N.; two sons, Jack (Catherine) of Littleton, Colorado, and David (Deborah) of LaGrange Park; her daughter, Susan of Denver; two grandchildren, David and Danielle; her brother, Sylvester (Phyllis) Lulinski; and her dearest niece, Darice.

Dr. Lulinski-Dybalski was the first elected president of a 252 member medical staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital, as well as the first woman to be named staff president. She was in professional practice for 60 years.

CYNTHIA ‘CINDY’ JEAN AKINS, nee Rasmussen, age 56, of Byron, Illinois passed away peacefully at her mother’s home in Lombard on April 25.

Memorial Gathering will be held Wednesday, May 1 from 3 to 9 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.
Interment Private

Mrs. Akins is survived by her husband, David L.; her son, John A. Gage; her daughter, Christine M. (Tim) Watson; her step-daughter, Nicole M. Akins; three brothers, Bill, Bob, and Fred Rasmussen; her mother, Mary L. Rasmussen; many nieces and nephews; and her close friend, Marsha Raffen; and her cousin, Ray Olson.
Mrs. Akins is preceded in death by her father, William H. Rasmussen.

Mrs. Akins had moved to her dream house on the Rock River where she had camped with her children every week-end growing up. She had a Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Illinois University. Mrs. Akins enjoyed gardening and interior decorating. She was very creative and had an artful eye. Mrs. Akins struggled with cancer after being diagnosed in November, 2011.

Mrs. Halvorsen is survived by her husband, Carl, of 69 years; two daughters, Carolyn Redmon of Lombard and Lorie (Terry) McAnarney of Springfield; two sons, Roger (Diane) of Glendale Heights and Alan of Chicago; ten grandchildren, Lisa (Jim) DuBovik, Teresa (Carmen) Sammauro, David (Vickie) Redmon, Stacy (Brian) Camron, Christopher, Jennifer (Dan) McHugh, Benjamin, Eric VanValkenburg, Rachael VanValkenburg, Mark VanValkenburg; and eleven great-grandchildren, Jessie, Jacob, Megan, Trevor, Taylor, Rylie, Anna, Connor, Tyler,Max, Zac and Michael.
Mrs. Halvorsen is preceded in death by a son-in-law, David Redmon Sr., two sisters and one brother.
Mrs. Halvorsen was a longtime member of St. John the Apostle Church in Villa Park.

Mrs. Reid loved to clean everything. She was an avid sewer. She raised her three brothers as well as many more. She was employed by National T. for 22 years.

Janet Kathryn Nolan, nee Keatley, lynchpin of the Nolan family, met Jesus face to face on April 24, 2013. Her graceful departure was celebrated by her family at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Janet partnered with her husband John in founding and growing “The Nolan Agency, Inc.” over the past 28 years. She was a kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother who also grew a wonderful family.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Kathleen Keatley and her sister Betty Keatley. In addition to her husband John, she leaves behind 5 great kids; John (Rhiannon), Jennifer (Dennis) Buchanan, Lucy(Frank) Torres, Jean Nolan (her friend Dave Palmer) and Peter Nolan (fiancé Renee Renello). She also leaves behind 11 grandkids; Patrick Nolan, Killian Nolan, Conley Nolan, Christine Buchanan, Brett Buchanan, Holly Buchanan, Frank Torres, Sarah Torres, Allison Torres, Nolan Shipley and Benjamin Shipley.

Janet also left behind another huge part of her life; sisters-in-law: Sister Lucy Nolan,S.P., Sister Carol Nolan, S.P. and Sister Nancy Nolan, S.P.

A Memorial Gathering will be held Sunday 3-9 p.m. at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St. Lombard with a Memorial Mass held Monday 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church 114 S. Elizabeth, Lombard.

Mrs. Shanahan is survived by her children:  Jerry (Sandy) of Crystal Lake, Maureen (Rory) Schraub of Villa Park, Eileen (Jack) Llewellyn of Springfield, MO, Sheila (Mike) Senjanin of Evergreen Park, and Patrick of Chicago; her grandchildren:  Kim, Kevin, Nick, Sara, Sean, Margaret, Bridget, Meghan, Lauren and Tyler; her great grandchildren:  Emily, Logan, Kyle, and Elisabeth; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Harold of 35 years. One grandson:  Justin, and three sisters and three brothers.

Mrs. Shanahan was born in County Mayo Ireland and came to the United States in 1947.  She was a resident of Berwyn for 30 years and Mayslake Village for 10 years.

Visitation will be held Sunday, April 21 from 2 to 5 pm at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 23 at 3 PM at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 22W415 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn.

Interment Private.

Mr. Elwood is survived by his wife, Jacqueline nee Reynolds; two daughters, Ann Cooke of Forest Park and Elizabeth (Kim) Swahlstedt of Naperville; four (4) grandchildren, Susan, Kristen, Jessica (Sean) Roe, and Michael; three (3) great-grandchildren, Katherine, Sophia, and Owen.  He was a step-father and an Uncle and Great Uncle of many.

Mr. Elwood is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E., nee Dilley.

Mr. Elwood was born October 29, 1926 in New York City, son of Sydell and Alfred Elwood.  He attended Syracuse University and met Dorothy Faye Dilley.  They married in 1945.  Bob enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 and was trained as a Paratrooper.  He was on the train headed to the west coast to be dropped over Tokyo when the war ended.  He graduated from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan on the G.I. Bill.  His wife, Dorothy died in 1976.  Bob married Jacqueline Reynolds in 1995.  He was active in the Episcopal Church as a Sunday school teacher, Vestry Member, and Usher for many years.
