STELLA M. GASICIEL, nee Bernas, age 97, of Villa Park for 56 years, died October 26 at her home.  Loving wife of the late William Albert. Dear mother of Mary Ann (Fred) Kijak of Villa Park, Estelle Marie (the late Peter) English of California, Sharon (the late Thomas Mark) Kazale of Compton Hills and formerly of Lombard, and William Paul (Socorro) of Algonquin. Fond Grandmother of Stephen (Adrienne) Kijak of Claremont, California, Paul (Marty) Kijak of Hanover Park, Desiree (Brian) Mavros of Lombard, Dr. Stella Marrie (Leland Peterson) of Vermont, Anna Marrie of San Francisco, Thomas Joseph (Jill) Kazale of Burlington, Illinois, Kristine (Mike) Gergen of Lombard, Jeffrey Kazale of Lombard, Denise Gasiciel of Chicago, Clarissa Gasiciel of Algonquin, William Joseph Gasiciel of Algonquin, Kimberly Gasiciel of Algonquin. Resident of Villa Park since 1958, Mrs. Gasiciel was a member of St. John The Apostle Catholic Church.  She loved to read, garden and cook.


Eberhard Block, age 81, a lifelong resident of Lombard,

BlockEberhard Block, age 81, a lifelong resident of Lombard, died October 27 at Lexington Healthcare in Lombard.

Graveside services will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Mr. Block is survived by his sisters, Thea (Dave) Wolfe of Idaho and Gundel (Frank) Sprouse of Winfield; great uncle of 13.

Mr. Block is preceded in death by his brother, Sigmund.

Mr. Block attended Lincoln Grade School and graduated from Glenbard West High School. He was a Vet for the US Army during the Korean War. Mr. Block worked for Packard Instruments and retired after 25 years of service. He was a former member of Lombard Bible Church.

David Palmer, age 49, suddenly, a lifelong resident of Lombard

PalmerDavid Palmer, age 49, suddenly, a lifelong resident of Lombard, died October 25 at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 3PM – 9PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard. Funeral service will be Thursday at 10:30 AM at Brust Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace.

David is survived by his mother, Carolyn Palmer nee Koop of Lombard; his siblings, James T. “Jimmy” (Liz) of Lombard, Suzanne (George) Spatz, Julie (Joseph Jr) Glazier of Lombard; his niece and nephew, Rachel and Mark Spatz; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Also survived by many friends.

David is preceded in death by his father James “Jim” Palmer.

David attended Green Valley Grade School, Lombard Jr. High, and graduated from Glenbard East in 1982. He was the owner of Palmer Tech in Lombard. David was a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church. He volunteered for many community activities in Lombard. David was always helping others. He had a passion for snowmobiling and was a Nascar fan.

His heart was big, his voice was loud, and his faith was strong.

American FlagEdward J. Smith, age 81, of Glen Ellyn, died October 21 at Atria Assisted Living, Glen Ellyn. A Private Memorial Service will be held later. Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Frank and Eddie of Glen Ellyn, a daughter, Sharon (Glenn) Johnson of Villa Park; two grandchildren, Jaime and Max Johnson and a dearest friend, Ruth. Memorials to the American Lung Association of IL, 55 W. Wacker Dr. Ste 800, Chicago, IL 60601 would be appreciated. Mr. Smith was a resident of Glen Ellyn for 40 years. He was a graduate of St Patrick’s High School. He was a former Manager of the Glen Ellyn AAA Speed Skaters. He retired from Amstead Industries in Bensenville after 30 years.

Dolores A. Pool, nee Strass, age 79, life-long resident of Lombard

PoolDOLORES A. POOL, nee Strass, age 79, of Lombard, died October 19 at her home.

Memorial Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 114 South Elizabeth, Lombard, on Saturday, October 25 at 10 AM.

Interment was private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Mrs. Pool is survived by 4 children; 3 grandchildren; and 5 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Pool is preceded in death by her husband, William ‘Bill’; and one brother.

Mrs. Pool was a resident of Lombard all her life.  She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Grade School and Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst.  Mrs. Pool was a Member of the C.C.W. at Sacred Heart Church where she was very active.  She was also active in local politics.

James A. “Jim” O’Toole, age 84

James A. “Jim” O’Toole, age 84, of Northlake, died October 15 at Gottilieb Memorial Hospital.

Born in 1930, Jim served in the Marine Corps and graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. He will be missed by his wife Rita (nee Grogan); his eight children, Jimmy (Michelle), Tommy (Jeanette), Maureen (Donald), Larry, Kathleen (Jim), Michael (Kelly), Fr. Billy, and Danny (Karen); and his 22 grandchildren, who will remember him as a great Irish man with a strong Catholic faith.

Visitation will be Sunday, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main Street, Lombard. He will be Lying-in-State on Monday from 9:00 AM until time of Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at Villa Scalabrini, 480 N. Wolf Road, Northlake. Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

American FlagDavid O’Keefe, age 83, of Lombard, retired CFD and Vet Korean War, died October 16 at Lexington Healthcare in Elmhurst.

Visitation will be Saturday, from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:30 AM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main Street, Lombard. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Glen Ellyn.

Mr. O’Keefe is survived by his three sons, David (Karen) of Worth, Scott (Mary) of Lombard and Brian of Chicago; his six grandchildren; his five great-grandchildren; and his three siblings, Jackie Franek of Buffalo Grove, Peggy Hart of Chicago, and Kenny O’Keefe of Arizona; many other relatives.

Mr. O’Keefe was a Veteran of the Korean War and served in Korea in the Artillery. He worked as an Engineer for the Chicago Fire Department and retired in 1996 after 30 years of service.

ShaneShane D. Gunsteen, age 45, of Lombard, died October 3 at home.

Shane is survived by his wife, Elisabeth S. nee Sali; a daughter, Emily; parents, Dennis and Sally nee Vilim, of Glen Ellyn; a sister, Jill of Glen Ellyn; a brother, Neil (Erin) of Schaumburg and a niece and two nephews.

A Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.

Mr. Gunsteen was a resident of Lombard for 11 years. He graduated from Glenbard West High School. He loved animals and worked at Veterinary Specialty Center in Buffalo Grove.

Helen Syler Black, 97. Former resident of Elmhurst, IL,

Helen Syler Black, 97.  Former resident of Elmhurst, IL,  passed away October 1, 2014 at Beacon Hill Health Care Center in Lombard, IL.

Helen was born May 12, 1917 in Milford, Ind. to Wilma and Burton Stilwell.  At the age of 2 her father died. Three years later her mother married and she was adopted by Harvey Syler.  The family moved to Nappanee, Ind. where she spent her childhood. After completing high school she entered Stephens College earning and associate degree then a bachelor’s degree was completed at Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL.

October 4, 1940 she married Chester Joseph Black of Chicago, IL.

Helen was preceded in death by her brother Condon Stilwell and her husband Chester.

Helen devoted her life to her family as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Paul Floyd of Fort Wayne, Ind. and her son and daughter-in-law, David and Marcia Black of Two Rivers, WI. ; Four grandchildren: Dawn Floyd Novak, Mark Floyd, Jeffrey Black, Kathryn Black Verri ; Eight great-grandchildren : Nickolas and Alexander Novak; Theodore, Evelyn, Abraham Floyd; Aiden, Liam Black and Ella Verri.

Private graveside services will be held at Violet Cemetery, Goshen Indiana.

Anthony W. Bujak, of Villa Park,

Anthony W. Bujak, of Villa Park, formerly of the Northwest side of Chicago, died Sept. 3 at home.

Interment was private.

Mr. Bujak is survived by a daughter, Eliza Lizars; a granddaughter, Isabel Lizars; his mother, Zona C. Bujak; a sister, Robin (Tony) Maro and two brothers, Jay Bujak and Timothy (Lisa) Bujak.

Mr. Bujak is preceded in death by his father, Leo W. Bujak.

Anthony was a Veteran of the U. S. Army and was a cabinetmaker for over 20 years.
