Barbara Figler Gallo, of Glen Ellyn

Sunday, January 3rd, 2016

barbara figler galloBarbara Figler Gallo, of Glen Ellyn passed away peacefully on December 29th at Good Samaritan Hospital, culminating her brave battle against lung cancer. She died with an attitude of gratitude. Her children, brother John, sister-in-law Rosemary and a very dear friend were all at her bedside as she took her final breath.
Barbara was loving mother to Lana (Paloumpis); Jason Figler. and was blessed with three wonderful grandchildren: Alec, Rebecca, and Michael Paloumpis. Beloved sister to John and Rosemary Gallo; Joe and Janette Gallo; Loving Aunt to Jeanne, Anne, Jonathan, Jamie, and Jacob Gallo.
Born February 27, 1943 in Chicago Illinois to Bernard and Helen (Valiga) Gallo, she graduated from Downers Grove North High School and attended Southern Illinois University and went on to graduate Summa cum Laude from The School of Hard Knocks.
As a young woman she enjoyed a successful sales career that spanned across a variety of different industries. She concluded her career as an Executive Assistant for Ball Horticultural Company. She had 10 wonderful years there and morphed co-worker relationships into lifetime friendships.
As a mother, there was nothing she wouldn’t do for her children; often forsaking her own happiness and comfort if it could save them from even a moment of suffering. She was a generous, beautiful, soul who loved with abandon. She was passionate about rescuing animals, and had two rescues pups of her own. In her spare time, she enjoyed kayaking, hockey, sewing, reading, and was an avid fan of the theater. Her wanderlust led her to purchase a trailer this past summer, with plans to hit the wide-open road as soon as felt stronger.
But what she valued most were the relationships she had cultivated over her lifetime. Her love of family was most evident during her mother’s extended battle with cancer. She attended to her throughout her illness and was at her bedside when she passed.
She donated to the many causes she believed in, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years, often having her grandchildren accompany her so they might learn about compassion and giving the priceless gift of ones time.
She was a spirited, multifaceted woman who touched the lives of so many, and will be dearly missed by all who had the honor to have known her. We were all in awe with the graciousness she exhibited after her diagnosis; she woke up every single day, with a heart that was over-flowing and profound appreciation for the opportunity she had been given to spend time with those she loved. Her only regret was that she didn’t have more time to tell just one more story, listen just a moment longer.
In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to The American Cancer Society or NAMI. The memorial visitation will be held at, Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St, Lombard on Saturday, January 9th. from 10 AM to 3 PM with a formal service commencing at 2 PM. Lana will be hosting a buffet style dinner gathering at her home directly following the service. There will be maps at the funeral home with directions.
