Patton, MartinAmerican Flag

Born in Chicago on July 12, 1922, Martin Francis Patton embraced life for 95 years before peacefully entering into Eternal Life on January 18.

Marty was a true gentleman with a kind heart, a joyful nature, and a curious mind. Always hospitable and quick to laugh, he loved telling a good story and enjoying a well-made Manhattan.

Marty grew up on Chicago’s Northside, the son of the late James and Mary (nee Delaney) and the brother of the late Eileen (Francis McGowan). He attended St Gregory’s grade school, Loyola Academy, and Pennsylvania State University. In true Chicago fashion, he spent many summers playing 16 inch softball and cheering on the White Sox. Marty proudly served in World War II as part of the Army Combat Engineers stationed in France and Germany – a profound experience on which he reflected throughout his life.

When he returned to civilian life, Marty married his beloved wife Marilyn (nee Frick) whom proceeded him in death after 59 years of marriage. While Marty had a very successful career working for the Department of Defense and building his own consulting company, it was as a father that he made his lasting mark. Raising his family in Bellwood, Marty devoted his time and talents to the parent association at St. John Chrysostom grade school, coaching Little League and softball, and making lifelong friends. In his later years, Marty enjoyed regaling his family with stories of youthful exploits, amusing and serious tales of his time in the service, and conversing about the news of the day.

He is survived by his grateful children James (Claudia), Donna (David Stubben), and Robert (Sharon Bird); his adoring grandchildren, the late Mary, Ryan, Jennifer, Bailey, Martin, Grace, Amber, Mitch, James, and David; and his treasured caregiver, Sam.
