MangelsAmerican_Flag_x300Celebrating the life of Frank Mangels, 91, who died on November 3, 2019. He was loved by his family, daughters: Wanda Drewel (Lewis Fischbein); Wendy Zimmerman (Bruce); Wynn Navarro (Michael); and his grandchildren: Katie Zimmerman (Michael Kernan); Beth Zimmerman (Mo Amer); Julia Navarro (Jordan Milam); Amanda Drewel (Jacob Batey); and Franklin Navarro; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Avis (nee Miller), his parents: Frank and Martha (nee Koehler), his sisters: Lucille Boese and Lillian Lubbert, and his granddaughter, Paige Drewel.

His many friends at Community Presbyterian Church of Lombard, were a special part of his life. The church provided a place to live out his faith, as he served as a trustee, deacon, youth group leader, mission trip foreman, and helped with other duties, as assigned. His buddies at the Christian Church of Villa Park were also a tremendous support over the years.

He was proud of his military service, during the Korean War. He served in the Army from 1951-1952, where he ran Frank’s Happy Tap, in addition to fighting for his country.

His life’s work as a carpenter and general contractor began at Lane Tech High School. He co-owned Linden Construction Company, with his brother-in-law, Bob Ewert. Their ventures ranged from residential construction and building White Castle restaurants to projects at Argon National Laboratories and the Regenstein Center at the Chicago Botanic Gardens.

Frank enjoyed sports and was a life-long White Sox fan.  He played semi-pro football and softball in his younger years. His love of fishing provided many hours of enjoyment with family and friends, but a meal of fish seldom crossed his lips. His strong faith, sense of humor, and his love of music, were wonderful companions throughout his life, even in his final days.
