Mr Mertz “Bob” was my boss at the Post Office in 1973 where I was employed in newly created position of Postal Assistant. The job was for selected high school students to perform the odd jobs around the Post Office, but soon grew into many hours and even delivery of mail routes. Our intense work ethic resulted in numerous extra hours taking coveted overtime away from the regulars. We were soon voted out by the union. Mr Mertz was a great leader, fun to be around and extremely caring. I immensely enjoyed the short time I had the honor of working on his team. God Bless him and his family during this difficult time. Please know that he made a great and lasting impact on one young man. Paul Bethke Colonel, US Army (Ret)

Bob was a great friend and such a wonderful supporter when we began to restore the Lombard Cemetery and always had the answer to my questions concerning the burials there. I always enjoyed our talks about who lived in what house on whatever street we were discussing….he had those answers too! He was a special person and will be missed!!! We’re so sorry for your lose!! Prayers for all of his family!!!

Uncle Bob was the kindness man. I remember when my sister and I were kids and Uncle Bob would play jokes on us. We will never forget he came to our dad’s wake in July 2019. It meant a lot to us he was there. We will miss him.
