Ilva G. Szopa (nee Bartolomei) age 97.

Written by Brust Funeral Home on August 4th, 2013

The world lost one of the good ones on Saturday.  Ilva G. Szopa (nee Bartolomei) passed away at the age of 97.  Ilva was born in Pariana, Italy and emigrated to the U.S. at the age of four.  She was a registered nurse and served in the Army Nurse Corp in WWII, attaining the rank of Captain.   She went on to be the Director of Nursing for a chain of seven nursing homes, first retiring at 65, then being coaxed to come back in a consulting role as Director of Resident Services for the chain for another 10 years.  Upon her final retirement, she had the time to become more involved in her church and the community.  She started the Health Advocate Team at St. Pius X in Lombard, Illinois and chaired the Health Committee for the DuPage Senior Citizens Council.  In 1992, Ilva became the Council’s VP of Programs and the following year she was elected Board President.  Finally, in 2003, the Council honored her tireless commitment by establishing the “Ilva G. Szopa Volunteer of the Year Award” and made her the first recipient.  She was included in the 1979 “Who’s Who of American Women” and the 1980 “World’s Who’s Who of Women.”  She is survived by her son, Ronald (Jamie), her grandchildren, Emily (Paul) Slayton, Elisa, John (Kelly), James and Isabella, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and great grandnieces and great grandnephews.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John, her parents, Ampelio and Marfisa, her sisters, Coralina (Picchiotti) and Lydia (Bill) Webster and brothers, James and Edilio (Ruby).  Though small in stature, Ilva was a giant by any other measure.   She was deeply loved and will truly be missed.

Visitation will be held Monday, August 5 from 3 to 8 PM at Brust Funeral Home, 135 South Main Street, Lombard.

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 6 with prayers at 9:30 AM from Brust Funeral Home to St. Pius X Church, Lombard, for 10 AM Mass.

Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery, DesPlaines, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the DuPage Senior Citizens Council, 1919 South Highland Avenue, Lombard, Illinois 60148 would be appreciated.

Even to her last days Ilva had a profound effect on the people she met. She touched many lives. I send my condolences and hope the memories we shared to celebrate her life were as meaningful as it was to hear your memories of her.
