George J. “Greg” Mahoney, age 78

MAHONEY, age 78, died December 29 at DuPage Convalescent Center, Wheaton, Illinois.  Survived by his wife, Bonnie nee Brown Mahoney; his daughter, Heather (Ron Walker) Heggemann, his son, Terence (Andrea) Mahoney; grandsons, Liam Heggemann, Lawrence, Phillip, and Edward Witkowski; and his brothers, Michael (Linda) Mooney, and Patrick (Jacqueline) Mooney.

Greg was born April 28, 1938 at Oak Park Hospital, Oak Park, Illinois and was raised in Oak Park.  He was schooled at St. Catherine of Siena Elementary and Fenwick High School, both in Oak Park.  He was a graduate of St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Indiana where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor degree in journalism.

Greg was a Veteran and served four years of active duty assigned to the communications group of Ninth Air Force Tactical Air Command at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina.  He was honorably discharged and awarded The Air Force Commendation Medal.

Greg was employed for a number of years at Chicago’s west suburban newspaper company, Press Publications, initially as a reporter, lastly as editor before departing to create his own writing and publishing company.

A private family burial will be held Friday, 1/6/17 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, a public Mass will be held at St. Pius X, in Lombard at 10:30 AM on Saturday, 1/7/17, followed by a private, family luncheon.

In lieu of kind remembrances, donations would be appreciated to the DuPage Convalescent Center, Alzheimer’s Care Unit, 400 North County Farm Road, Wheaton, Illinois 60187.
