Joe William Peel, aged 88, died peacefully on Sunday June 11, 2017 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Illinois.  Mr. Peel was born on November 12, 1928 in his maternal grandmother’s house in Erie, Kansas, and was the only son of the late George Franklin Peel and Fern Corrine (Pugh) Peel.

He was the beloved husband of Mary Ann (Bromich), father of William Henry Peel (Melanie), and Barbara Ann Pletsch (Joseph); and grandfather of Megan Barag (Aaron), Emily Peel, Kyle Pletsch and Jacob Pletsch, as well as a beloved brother-in-law and uncle.

Having grown up in Pittsburg, Kansas, Mr. Peel graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg in 1950.  From there he joined the U. S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge in 1953.  After serving with the Marines, Mr. Peel began work with the Kansas Highway Patrol and also began law school at Washburn University of Topeka, graduating in 1955.  Upon graduation, Mr. Peel worked for the Kansas Insurance Department, and then was recruited by the Health Insurance Association of America (HIAA) to work in their Chicago office.  He earned the title of Vice President and General Counsel of the HIAA during a distinguished 32 year career.

Mr. Peel enjoyed playing golf, travelling extensively with his wife and doting on his grandchildren.  At the time of his death, Mr. Peel was a resident of Lexington Square of Lombard.  A memorial service for Mr. Peel will be held in the Hyde Park Room at Lexington Square of Lombard at 555 Foxworth Boulevard, Lombard, Illinois on Sunday June 25 at 11:00 AM.  Interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery at 4700 West 17th Street in Topeka, Kansas on Saturday, July 22 at 10:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations go to the Alzheimer’s Association at, in honor of Mary Ann Peel.

    My thoughts and prayers are with Barb and her family during this time. It is hard to lose a parent and I am saddened to hear of his passing.
